The P220 is a large-diaphragm true condenser microphone offering a warm and clear sound for lead vocals, acoustic guitar and brass instruments. A switchable bass-cut filter and attenuation pad make it perfectly suited for use on loud sound sources with sound pressure levels up to 155dB SPL. The rugged and roadworthy design also makes the P220 a perfect choice for on-stage applications.

The P220 represents the most popular and successful microphone within the actual Project Studio Line. It comes complete with a spider-type shock mount in an aluminum carrying case.

The one thing I wish was different (and why I took off one star) is that it has a sharp peak at 10 kHz which makes the audio, eg my vocal, VERY bright. And it's not a "crisp" bright - it's more of a "very focused" or sharp bright, if that makes sense. I could tame it with EQ but that would be annoying every time, so I accomplish it using a foam wind sock (foam pop filter that slips over the mic). You wouldn't normally do this with a studio condenser because it attenuates the highs, but it definitely smooths out the top end. :) Regardless, I REALLY like this mic and I can recommend it for vocals and guitar. Final note: the mic preamp is often not talked about when it comes to the sound of a mic - different preamps give different sounds and frequency responses. Currently I'm using a Behringer UMC 202HD and its preamps seem to be a good match with this mic.
Date published: 2021-02-01

Rated 4 out of 5 by wrains72 from Great value for the project studio I've owned a P220 for some years. While it does a perfect job on acoustic guitars, it has a tendency to pick up sounds from right behind the mic. After contacting AKG they said it might be a faulty capsule, but after comparing two P220’s at the store - they were exactly the same.
