Closed-back reference over-ear headphones.

With the K550MKIIIs, AKG® engineers have struck a masterful balance between the noise-isolating qualities of closed back headphones and the spacious, dimensional sound of an open-back design – creating reference-class headphones ideal for private listening both at home and on the go. 50mm drivers, the largest in our product line, deliver great AKG sound from your hi-fi system or virtually any portable device. The large ear cups and new headband design ensure an amazingly comfortable fit, and the 2D-Axis mechanism folds flat to stow or go.

AKG K550 MKIII is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Sounds Owned these for nearly 2 months and am very pleased with their smooth, balanced and highly detailed sound. I did find it important however to give them some time. I don't believe in burn in but perhaps in break in or brain adjustment. Either way they appeared improved to me after 10 to 20 hours use. The balance was constant but bass notes, while no deeper, seemed to extend or fill out. Now they just sound beautiful to me. Good depth and impact while pretty close to neutral, how I prefer. I also felt comfort increased as the pads and cushion bedded in. Isolation is just ok, but good enough for me not to feel too disturbed by a TV in the background, and naturally far better than open back headphones. They get a little warm but I can last a movie comfortably. They are easily driven by my tablet and feel built to last.

Do these sound any different than the K553 Pro mkII? If not, what is the exact difference between the two? Are they made in different places? Thanks

Asked by: donunus
The K550 MKII and K553 headphones actually are similar to each other and the main difference would be more on the components that were used to create them. But if you'd like a more detailed explanation of the specs or product, we would like to work with you directly to help you with your issue. Is there a cord with in-line remote that could be used withthese headphones? Thanks.

Asked by: luckybreak
I found one made from cables to go on amazon.com.  Its a mini XLR to 3.5 with a mic and controls.  Haven't received it yet, so don't know if it works yet.   Not sure if AKG makes one yet.

Will the V-moda Boom Pro microphone work with this headphone? Does the cable have a locking mechanism on the headphone end? Many people have questions about replacement cables. It would be nice to have some suggestions for shorter cables on product page

I have the K550 (first version so i guess MKI). Besides the detachable cable in the MKIII is there any difference between the MKI and MKIII sonically speaking?

Asked by: polskasweetie
Hi, and thank you for supporting AKG!. The three version are all identical in all respects that pertain to audio. They also have the same parts numbers for ear pads and headband pad. So, the only difference between your K550 and the MKIII is indeed the detachable cable.

Can these ever be used as a wireless unit? Sorry, the last headphones I purchased were over 20 years ago. I want something I can plug into the front of my stereo receiver but the wireless feature is appealing as well.

Asked by: zini
Unfortunately the AKG K550 MKIII is not a wireless headphone. It comes with a detachable 3.5 mm cable.

Is the build the same as the older mkII ( build materials and ear cup dimensions )?

Asked by: rayray
We can confirm that the MKIII is totally identical to the prior versions, except for the detachable cable. All spare parts are identical, the few we carry, ear pads, headband pad etc. All dimensions are of course identical.

Will the cable from akg k701/702 fit this model?

Asked by: rayray
The cables that are used in these models are 3.5mm so it should fit.
