Types of headphones (open-air, closed-back, etc.) |
|
So-called open-air or open headphones do not hermetically isolate the ears from the outside world but allow sound to pass through. Closed-back or closed designs provide high attenuation of outside sounds. Closed-back headphones are preferred for situations where no sound should leak into or from the headphones, e.g., overdubbing vocals (no sound must spill from the headphones into the microphone); a video sound engineer recording an interview on location; or a DJ in a noisy club. So-called semi-open designs are a combination of the above. |
