Switzerland: SWX Swiss Exchange, Zürich

Swiss Stock Exchange Relies on Superior Microphones from AKG

The SWX Swiss Exchange is the Swiss stock exchange in Zurich. It is one of the world's most technologically advanced stock exchanges. Though firmly rooted in Switzerland's strong financial center, the SWX resolutely pursues a strategy focused on international activities. The SWX works together with selected international partners to provide first-rate stock exchange services on a transnational level. The most significant factors in this respect include a broad range of products as well as an integrated, fully electronic trading, clearing, and settlement system. Orders can be executed, cleared, settled, and confirmed with a single mouse click. A recently completed modernization project by Kilchenmann and WSDG included audio products from AKG.

The equipment in the "Decision" multimedia conference room was found to be outdated and needed upgrading to the state of the art. One special challenge was the venue itself: the room has glass walls on all sides. Since glass reflects sound up to the highest frequencies, the sound system had to be designed with utmost precision. The solution was to use several different loudspeaker systems. Active line array speakers ensure clear intelligibility. For conference use, a retractable column with a 360-degree loudspeaker and several video cameras have been installed in the center of the room. The existing loudspeakers can still be used for multimedia presentations. The beamer too needed to be extremely powerful for the room with its glass walls is very light. Kilchenmann also completely upgraded and reprogrammed the entire room control system with its AMX touch panel.

Erwin Herzog, project manager for the installation company, Kilchenmann (http://www.kilchenmann.ch/), said in a recent interview:

Q: What was your original job for Swiss Financial Market Services and what needs arose while you were working on the project?
A: The auditorium was about seven years old and had to be rebuilt. The existing audio/video system was inadequate from the start. We were asked to replace it with a state-of-the-art system.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in the project?
A: Since the auditorium was a "crystal palace" of sorts, its acoustics was a particular challenge. The renowned acoustic design firm WSDG made the acoustic measurements of the room. Then the selection and placement of new loudspeakers and microphones has been optimized carefully.

Q: What was the nicest experience, most pleasant surprise, or most striking discovery for you in the project?
A: We managed to hand over the project on time in spite of the close deadline and still fulfilled all of the client's requirements and wishes. We even kept the price appreciably lower than budgeted!

Q: Which AKG products did you use?
A: 33 AKG GN 30 E 5PIN gooseneck microphones
33 AKG CK 31 microphone capsules
    33 AKG H 600 shock mounts

Q: The photos show a modified AKG H 600 microphone shock mount. Why did you not use the standard version?
A: The sizes of the tabletops had to be exactly as specified by the designer. The diameter of the AKG H 600 was a little bit too large. AKG made a special version with a smaller outside diameter to our specifications for this important project.

Q: Why did you prefer AKG products?
A: We chose AKG products for their high quality, high gain before feedback, and flexibility.

Erwin Herzog has been working in the audio/video industry for twelve years including six years at Kilchenmann. He began by gathering experience as a technician and has worked as a project manager for about nine years, his responsibilities including customer relations, tenders, quotations, preparation of concepts, order handling, planning monitoring, instruction, and acceptance. His projects range from simple to very large, complex audio/video installations in auditoriums, places of worship, assembly halls, board rooms, at the Zurich airport, in army barracks, etc. Multiple projection systems at the Zurich Park Hyatt Hotel; room control systems at the Winterthur interpretation center and at Bank Julius Bär in Zurich; the video and teleconferencing system, acoustic design, microphone system, and conference system at the Zurich Versicherung insurance company, etc. are but a few examples.

"Microphone solutions from AKG are appreciated both by musicians and sound engineers as well as leading installation firms and acoustic consultants," explains Thomas Stubics, Product Marketing Manager at AKG Acoustics. "Particularly in the Installed Sound marketplace, solutions from AKG are famous for maximum flexibility, excellent sound, and proven reliability. We are proud to have made an important contribution to this project for an internationally active institution that uses advanced technologies and made communication its top priority."
