I would like to hook up a microphone for online karaoke. I bought a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter from radio shack to hook a standard microphone to the microphone jack in the back of the computer, but I get no sound. Does this need software or a driver for a microphone? Help please.

So, u bought a converter from 1/4 to 3.5. From my experience, that can really affect the quality of the mic.sound. But it should be working. It kinda depends about the OS ur using (sound options), but everything is practically the same. U should open volume control and look 4 microphone level. Maybe it's muted. Or, go to control panel/sound and test the microphone. If u don't see green sliders moving when ur testing it, then it's probably something with the cable. Greetings.
